What it does

Solid Edge is Siemens mechanical CAD software for dimensioned parts, assemblies and drawings. Its synchronous tools combine direct geometry edits with dimensional control, including changes to imported CAD models. Designcenter X Solid Edge offers monthly or annual subscriptions, and a 30-day full-product trial is available.

Imported geometry can be edited without recovering its original feature history. Synchronous tools let you move faces directly, add dimensions and coordinate changes across several assembly parts. This suits revisions where a supplier's model needs to fit a changed opening or neighbouring component.

For a smaller exchange file, the context export introduced in Solid Edge 2026 lets you select the model sections to share. A Save As checkbox includes only visible geometry or trimmed parts. This can provide the surrounding geometry another designer needs without sending the full assembly.

Model-based annotations can combine a dimension and a feature-control frame through Smart Dimension or Distance Between. The two elements remain separately editable, and saved settings can be reused. These annotations describe manufacturing intent alongside the model.

Package Tool scope
Foundation Adds sheet-metal and frame tools to basic part, assembly and drawing work
Classic Includes reverse engineering and subdivision modelling
Premium Includes reverse engineering and subdivision modelling

DSTV output for steel fabrication is a separate value-based-licensing add-on. A full-product trial lasts 30 days. The Designcenter X Solid Edge offering uses monthly or annual subscriptions with built-in revision and release management.

Strengths

  • Imported solid geometry can be changed with direct and dimensional controls.
  • Context export can share selected surrounding geometry instead of an entire assembly.

Watch out for

  • Reverse engineering and subdivision modelling require Classic or Premium in the published package comparison.
  • DSTV steel-fabrication export requires a separate add-on entitlement.

Best for

  • Mechanical teams revising supplier CAD parts
  • Assembly work requiring selected context to be shared with another designer
