What it does

Sonic Visualiser is an open-source application for viewing, analysing and annotating recorded music.

Load a WAV, Ogg or MP3 file into the local analysis workspace, then compare waveform or spectrogram views with labelled points, segments and curves. Imported text annotations and MIDI notes can sit beside the audio.

Loop or slow a selected passage while inspecting the aligned layers, then export audio regions or annotations to files. Optional feature-extraction plugins add analyses such as beat or pitch detection. Choose those for the musical question and allow for their processing, memory and disk needs.

Best for

  • Researchers and musicians examining recordings
