What it does
SooperLooper records and layers live loops, with overdubbing, multiplying, reversing and MIDI or OSC control. It offers a standalone JACK application and a macOS Audio Unit version.
A foot-controlled looping rig is the clearest fit: record a phrase, overdub another part, then multiply or reverse a loop while continuing to play. Several multichannel loops can run together. The audio engine and desktop interface communicate through OSC, allowing control to be arranged separately from the sound engine.
Setup depends on which version you choose. The standalone application uses JACK; the macOS Audio Unit does not require JACK, but the download instructions still require the separate GUI application. The publisher also notes that the Mac application is not notarised. These installation and routing details deserve attention before planning a live rig around it.
Strengths
- Loop recording, overdubbing and transformations can be controlled through MIDI.
- A separate engine and OSC interface support flexible performance control.
Watch out for
- The standalone version requires JACK.
- The Mac application is not notarised and has additional installation steps.
Best for
- Instrumentalists arranging a MIDI-controlled live looping setup
