What it does
Sparrow is a free desktop Bitcoin wallet with coin selection, transaction labels, multisignature support and connections to public servers or your own node. It can prepare transactions for a separate hardware signer.
Sparrow exposes the parts of a Bitcoin payment that simpler wallets often hide. Its coin view deals with unspent transaction outputs, the individual amounts available to spend. Labels help distinguish where those amounts came from, while the transaction diagram shows which inputs, receiving addresses and change outputs an intended payment will use.
It is free Apache 2 licensed software for Windows, Mac and Linux. Bitcoin transaction fees still apply. Download the correct build and follow its release-verification instructions. If Sparrow is already installed, Tools, then Verify Download checks the installer alongside its manifest and signature files; a first installation uses the separate verification procedure on the download page.
The welcome wizard offers a public server, Bitcoin Core or a private Electrum server. A public server is convenient for getting started, but it receives public-key information about the wallet and can learn its activity. An operator who wants control over that disclosure can connect to their own trusted server.
Create New Wallet opens the wallet policy and key settings. Choose a connected hardware wallet, an offline hardware wallet, a software wallet or a watch-only public key. For a newly generated software wallet, save the recovery words and use Confirm Backup to re-enter them. Complete the key import, select Apply and protect the wallet file with a password. Receive, then Get Next Address, displays a receiving address.
For payments, inspect the selected coins, destination, change and fee estimate before signing. Sparrow supports Partially Signed Bitcoin Transactions, or PSBTs, which carry a transaction between the wallet and a separate signing device. USB, files and supported QR-code workflows let hardware keys remain on their device. A watch-only wallet can inspect activity but cannot spend without a signer. The software gives you these controls; keeping recovery material and the signing device available remains your responsibility.
