What it does

SpeedyPainter is a free Windows painting application with pressure-sensitive brushes, layers and a reference view. It records the drawing process for replay or AVI video export. You can download an installer or portable version without creating an account.

Keep the painting and its process

SpeedyPainter uses SPF for an editable painting and DPF for a recorded drawing process. PNG, JPG, BMP and TIF exports flatten the artwork. This matters if you want both a finished illustration and a video showing how it was drawn.

To begin, create a new image and choose its dimensions. Press B for the brush and F5 for properties such as texture, spacing, scattering and pressure response. The colour selector sits on the right; holding the right mouse button brings it to the cursor.

Working from a reference

The reference view follows movements of the canvas, so the corresponding detail stays visible while you zoom and pan. Mirror tools support symmetrical or radial drawing. You can replay a saved process from its first action or render it to AVI. The application is free, with no account requirement.

Strengths

  • Installer and portable downloads are both available
  • Pressure can control brush size and opacity
  • Selection, crop and perspective tools are included

Watch out for

  • Editable layers require SPF rather than a standard image export
  • Only a Windows version is offered

Best for

  • Windows artists making reference studies
  • Illustrators sharing a recorded drawing process
