What it does

SplitMyExpenses tracks shared expenses, group balances and settlements on the web, iOS and Android. An account is required, and manual bill splitting is free without limits on friends or groups. Premium adds receipt scanning, bank imports and automatic currency conversion.

Divide a restaurant receipt by what people ordered

Create an expense using the itemization split type, add the participants and identify who paid. Enter each receipt line and select the people sharing it. The Simple editor divides a shared item equally among those selected; Advanced supports custom percentages, shares and amounts. Tax and tip are weighted by each person's food subtotal.

A coupon can be a negative line named Discount. Assign it only to the people sharing the saving, then review each total before saving. For example, a £6 coupon shared by three people reduces each share by £2 in Simple mode.

Free entry or paid automation

Free includes ten recurring expenses and imports of expenses up to one month old. Premium is US$3.99 a month in the US App Store. It adds receipt scanning, up to 100 active recurring expenses, ten years of imported history and daily imports from up to 50 cards or bank accounts.

Create a group and share its invitation link so friends can register. After expenses are saved, payment links can open services such as Venmo or PayPal. Recording a bill does not transfer money: confirm the repayment separately, then record it against the balance.

Strengths

  • Free accounts can export their expense records as CSV.
  • Amount, date and description remain editable after a file import.

Watch out for

  • Equal splits allocate a leftover cent in the order participants are listed.

Best for

  • Dinner groups with different orders and shared dishes
  • Roommates dividing recurring bills with unequal contributions
