What it does
Spree Commerce is a self-hostable commerce platform for custom stores, B2B sales and marketplaces. Its free Community Edition includes company accounts, price lists and draft orders. Enterprise adds capabilities such as approval flows and seller-store synchronization under a quoted commercial licence.
Spree's Community Edition provides a free foundation for a custom shop or marketplace. Its backend uses the BSD 3-Clause licence and its storefront the MIT licence. Company accounts, price lists, seller management, commissions and Stripe Connect payouts are available in Community; Enterprise adds functions including multi-tenant operations and Shopify or WooCommerce seller synchronization.
Turn an assisted sale into an order
Open Orders > Draft Orders > New Order. Add the customer or guest email, variants and quantities, then create the draft and fill its addresses. A shipping address is needed before choosing fulfilment.
Select the stock location and delivery through the fulfilment Actions menu. Editing an order line clears the delivery choice. Add payment through the Payments card and capture it when appropriate. Check delivery, then Complete Order to allocate stock and send confirmation.
An unfinished draft is hidden from the customer and reserves no stock.
Account and operating costs
The installation flow creates an administrator account using the store's email and password details. This is the deployed shop's account, rather than a requirement to register every shopper with Spree.
The free edition has no core software licence charge, but the project still needs development, hosting and ongoing maintenance. Enterprise has custom commercial terms; managed private-cloud hosting is an additional option. Choose the edition around the required buying and seller workflows, including any approval or external-store synchronization requirements.
Strengths
- Editable draft orders support assisted sales and negotiated prices
- The free edition includes company buying and marketplace building blocks
Watch out for
- Draft orders do not reserve inventory until completed
- Enterprise is required for the listed seller-store synchronization and approval features
- Custom implementation and hosting require technical resources
Best for
- Teams developing custom B2B stores or marketplaces
