What it does
sshuttle provides a VPN-like transparent-proxy workflow through an existing SSH connection to a remote network.
sshuttle is aimed at the case where you can SSH into a network but do not have a conventional VPN service there. Its overview contrasts that with writing a separate SSH port forward for every destination and notes that remote administrator access is not always necessary. That makes it useful for a temporary authorized administration path. It is a transparent-proxy design rather than an interchangeable implementation of every IP VPN protocol, so read the requirements for the client and remote host before choosing it.
Strengths
- Uses an existing authorized SSH access path
- Avoids individual host/port-forward rules
Best for
- Administrators with SSH access but no conventional remote VPN service
