What it does

Starling Bank provides app-based UK personal, joint and business accounts. Its personal current account has no monthly maintenance fee and uses Spaces to separate money for budgets or bills. Applicants must be UK residents aged 18 or over, and some services carry separate charges.

Put recurring bills in a Space

Bills Manager pays recurring bills from a separate Space. That leaves a clearer everyday balance after money for rent, utilities or other commitments has been set aside. Virtual cards can also spend from individual Spaces.

Fees and opening an account

The personal current account has a £0 maintenance fee. Starling charges for some additional services, including certain international transfers and cash deposits above its included allowance. Its fee information document lists the charges separately, so no monthly fee does not mean every service is free.

Start the application on a phone or computer, provide a passport or photo ID, and wait for Starling’s decision. You must live in the UK and be at least 18. Savings accounts, a joint account and children’s debit cards have their own in-app application routes.

Starling says eligible deposits are covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme up to £120,000.

Strengths

  • Virtual cards can spend directly from individual Spaces.
  • Bills Manager separates recurring commitments from other spending.

Watch out for

  • Available to UK residents aged 18 or over.
  • International transfers and cash deposits beyond the included allowance can incur fees.

Best for

  • UK adults who want bill budgets connected directly to their bank account
  • Households comparing personal and joint account options
