What it does

Stoplight is an API design and documentation platform built around OpenAPI and JSON Schema. Its editor offers visual form and code views plus previews of the resulting documentation. Projects can include reusable models, articles and other files. The platform supports Git-based workflows, style-guide validation and mock servers for trying a design before an API is ready. It is for designing and documenting APIs, not an API gateway or general-purpose API client.

Stoplight helps teams shape an API contract and its documentation. The design page describes a visual OpenAPI and JSON Schema editor, previews, reusable components, style guides and mock servers.

A practical first exercise is to create a workspace and project, add an API description, then define a path, parameters and response schema. The getting-started tutorial demonstrates switching between Form and Code views and generating a schema from sample JSON. This is an illustrative workflow; no project was created. The editor docs describe a Preview for documentation and an Issues view for validation and lint findings.

Publishing depends on project type: web projects can be published, while Git-connected projects use a commit-and-publish flow. The tutorial notes that its sample Try It request can encounter CORS restrictions from the example API, so a documentation preview is not evidence that a real endpoint is reachable. Workspace guests cannot access the Design Editor. The pricing page lists subscriptions and 14-day trials; whether an ongoing no-charge plan is available was not established.

Strengths

  • Pairs visual Form and Code editing for OpenAPI and JSON Schema with a preview of the resulting documentation.
  • Supports reusable models, style-guide validation and Git-based workflows.
  • Includes automatic mock servers for prototyping API designs.

Watch out for

  • Paid plans charge per user beyond included seats.
  • Workspace guests cannot access the Design Editor.

Best for

  • Teams designing and documenting OpenAPI or JSON Schema contracts.
  • API programs that want reusable models, Git workflows, mock servers or shared style guides.
