What it does

SubWallet is a free wallet for supported Polkadot, Substrate and Ethereum accounts, with extension, mobile and web-dashboard access. It can organize several recovery phrases behind one local password, and the extension's code is licensed under Apache 2.0.

SubWallet distinguishes creating an independent phrase from deriving another account from an existing one. That distinction matters when arranging backups: an additional named account does not necessarily mean an independent recovery secret.

For a fresh extension installation, select Create a new account and read the terms. Set the master password, acknowledge the backup warnings and record the twelve recovery words before naming the account. This is local wallet setup rather than an email-based registration.

The master password must contain at least eight characters, including a capital letter, number and special character. It controls access to the account sets stored in that installation. SubWallet cannot recover a forgotten password for you; the corresponding phrase is needed to import the account again.

For an account derived from an existing one, open the account selector, use the pen icon beside the original account and choose Derive. Supply a valid derivation path and a name, then select Create account. The new entry appears in the account list. A derivation path is the identifier used with the original secret to reproduce that particular account, so keep it with your backup records.

The download is free, while network transactions and connected financial applications have separate costs. SubWallet's web dashboard gives a broader account view, but it does not replace the private backups held outside the application. Losing signing credentials can make assets inaccessible, and the tokens themselves remain exposed to price changes.

Strengths

  • Supports Polkadot Vault, Ledger and Keystone signing devices
  • Phishing lists from Polkadot.js and ChainPatrol are integrated into browsing checks

Watch out for

  • One application password does not replace each independent account backup
  • The team cannot restore lost signing keys or local wallet data

Best for

  • Users keeping several Substrate and Ethereum account sets organized
  • People who need explicit control over derived account paths
