What it does

Sure is a free, open-source personal finance app with manual and connected accounts, CSV imports, transaction rules and category budgets. This community continuation of Maybe needs a running server and a user account; its browser app provides the full workflow.

Start with a manual account or CSV import when the first task is organizing an existing history. Sure supports income, expenses and transfers, with categories, merchants and tags for context. Linked transfers represent money moving between accounts, while rules handle repeated categorization.

The software is distributed under GNU AGPL version 3 and works without a contribution. Its public Try it link opens a sample-data demo. For your own installation, self-host with Docker or use an independent hosting provider; those providers set their own charges. The project’s pricing page says a directly operated hosted version is still planned.

From an account to a monthly budget

After opening your installation, choose Sign Up and finish the login setup. Use + Add Account, choose the account type, enter its name and current balance, and select Create Account. In Transactions, + New Transaction lets you record an Expense, Income or Transfer.

Set category limits to track spending and the amount remaining this month. A subcategory can have its own allocation or share its parent’s budget by leaving its limit empty. For example, groceries and takeaway can draw from one food budget while restaurant spending has a separate allocation.

Turn on Rollover when editing a category to carry unused money forward. Only a surplus carries; an overspend does not reduce the next month’s allowance. Switching rollover off for a month stops both incoming and outgoing carry for that month. A currency change also breaks the carry chain.

The Mac client displays the web app. The iOS and Android companion currently focuses on login and account balances, so use the browser for the complete transaction and budgeting workflow. Every client still needs the server.

Strengths

  • Manual accounts and CSV imports offer alternatives to connected accounts.
  • Subcategories can share a parent budget or have their own allocations.
  • Transaction filters and rules help organize an imported history.

Watch out for

  • The app requires a maintained server or separately paid hosting.
  • Mobile companion features are narrower than the browser app.
  • Rollover carries surpluses only, not overspending into the next month.

Best for

  • People seeking community-maintained personal finance software they can self-host
