What it does
SurrealDB is a multi-model database engine queried with SurrealQL. The official product and running guides describe relational, document, graph, vector, full-text, and time-series data, along with embedded, in-memory, single-node, and multi-node deployment options. SurrealDB Cloud is a separate managed service; this record is for software that an operator can run independently.
SurrealDB is useful to evaluate when an application needs linked records and more than one data shape without routing every query through a different database. Start with the local installation path in the official guide, choose an embedded or single-node instance, and use a small fixture with two related entities, such as people and projects. A SurrealQL query can then return the records connected to one person; the expected output is a set of linked records from the same engine. This is an illustrative first task, not a query run for this listing.
The product documentation describes record links, multiple data models, live queries, and granular permissions. Test the query and permission model against a small representative schema before moving production data; multi-model coverage does not remove the need to choose identifiers, relationships, and storage settings. Operators of self-hosted deployments also select the storage backend and topology.
Read the license before offering the engine to other database users. The core is under Business Source License 1.1 and is free for self-hosting in your own applications, but some third-party database-service use requires a commercial license. That is materially different from calling the engine open source. The managed SurrealDB Cloud product has its own plan and price choices.
Strengths
- Combines relational, document, graph, vector, full-text, and time-series data in one engine and query language.
- Supports embedded and in-memory use as well as self-hosted single-node and multi-node deployments.
- Includes live-query functionality and granular data permissions.
Watch out for
- The core code is under Business Source License 1.1; certain third-party database-service use requires a commercial license.
- Self-hosting requires choosing and operating a storage and deployment topology.
- The product page describes its PostgreSQL wire protocol as in development.
Best for
- Application teams evaluating a shared query model for relational, document, and graph-shaped records
- Developers who need embedded, local, or self-hosted database deployments
- Real-time applications that can use live queries and built-in permissions
