What it does

Sympa is an open-source application for email subscriptions, message distribution, moderation and archives. Separate roles let server administrators, list owners and message moderators handle different tasks. You host it yourself and configure the mail server, database and web interface.

Sympa assigns membership management and message approval to separate roles. A list owner can manage members and configuration; a moderator controls message distribution when moderation is enabled. The moderator role does not itself permit membership management. If a list has no named moderator, its owners inherit that role.

This division is useful for a university newsletter where an office maintains the subscriber list and an editor approves submissions. A privileged owner can manage the other owners and moderators. Domain listmasters handle matters such as list creation and domain templates, but do not automatically inherit message-moderator privileges. Configurable authorization rules determine who can subscribe and post.

Sympa is a server application under GPLv2. Installation involves database, mail-server and web-server configuration. A technical administrator runs the service, while owners and moderators handle the individual lists through the web interface.

Strengths

  • Membership administration and message moderation can be assigned separately
  • Domain and service roles support administration across multiple lists

Watch out for

  • Owners inherit moderation duties when no moderator is defined
  • Deployment requires database, mail-server and web-server configuration

Best for

  • Institutions needing explicit roles across managed mailing lists
