What it does
Isabel Symptom Checker lets people type several symptoms in their own words and returns a list of possible conditions. It covers rare and common diseases. The tool comes from Isabel Healthcare, which also provides clinical reasoning tools to doctors. Registration is free and asks for a name, email, password and country. The signup form states that the checker is for patients, not for medical staff, who are pointed to the professional site. The service is offered in several languages, including German, English, Spanish, French, Dutch and Portuguese.
The about page says the checker grew out of a paediatric tool built for the Isabel Medical Charity and was released for patients in 2012. It is described as free to use. A separate professional tool, the Isabel DDx Generator, is used by hospitals and clinicians. The patient site directs medical professionals to the professional site for more detailed disease information. Registration asks users to confirm they are not medical staff and do not intend to use the checker in daily practice. Personal data entered on the site is transferred to a hosting provider in the United States.
