What it does

Tableau provides visual analysis and interactive reporting for business data. Desktop supports direct data exploration, while Cloud and Server offer different ways to deploy and share analytics across an organization.

Tableau offers several ways to work with business data, and the free desktop option has a different sharing scope from an organizational deployment.

Route What it is for Main access condition
Desktop Free Edition Building and analyzing workbooks locally on Windows or Mac Register with a Tableau.com account; no paid activation
Tableau Cloud Sharing analytics through a managed service Paid user roles; every deployment needs at least one Creator
Tableau Server Operating an organizational analytics deployment yourself Paid roles plus responsibility for the server

Desktop Free Edition can connect to files and databases and provides local authoring. It cannot publish online, share packaged workbooks, or connect to published Cloud or Server data sources. That makes it useful for private analysis, but those restrictions matter if the intended result is a report colleagues can reuse.

During installation, choose Use Tableau for free and sign in to, or create, the Tableau.com account used for registration. For paid deployment, decide who needs to create data sources, explore existing content or simply view it. Cloud Standard is advertised from USD 15 per user per month on an annual contract billed annually; the required Creator role means that starting figure is not the complete cost of a new team deployment.

Strengths

  • Visual exploration supports moving from source data to interactive views.
  • Cloud and Server provide different deployment arrangements.

Watch out for

  • Desktop Free Edition cannot publish online or share packaged workbooks.
  • Paid organizational deployments require a Creator licence and appropriate roles for additional users.

Best for

  • Analysts creating visual reports for business teams
