What it does
TablePlus is a graphical database administration client for developers who prefer to inspect tables and issue queries from a desktop app. A connection needs the database type and its endpoint details, or a local file path for SQLite and DuckDB. The app supports a wide selection of database protocols, offers table editing and a SQL editor, and keeps edits pending until they are committed. It complements a database engine or hosted service rather than supplying one of its own, so you still need access to the database you intend to manage.
TablePlus is an administration interface, not a database service. Before connecting, have a server's host, port, user, and password ready. For SQLite or DuckDB, the documentation says a file path is enough. Choose a database type in the connection window, enter the details, then use Test and Connect to check access and open the connection.
Review edits before they reach the server
In the data view, double-click a cell to edit it. TablePlus does not send those edits until you commit them. The guide explains how to preview the SQL statements first, commit the change, or discard it. That separation is useful when working with important data: enable Safe Mode for the connection and inspect the proposed SQL before committing. The SQL editor can run the statement under the cursor or selected text, while query history, autocomplete, filters, and import/export tools support routine investigation.
For example, a developer could connect to a staging PostgreSQL database, filter a table to a small set of records, make a test edit, and preview the resulting statement before committing. That example is illustrative; no database was connected for this listing. TablePlus supports many protocols, including MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQLite, SQL Server, Redis, MongoDB, ClickHouse, DuckDB, and others, but the documentation notes that some database options are not available on every operating system.
License and platform fit
The pricing page describes a one-time desktop license with a limited free trial. The trial restricts how many tabs, windows, and advanced filters can be open at once. Paid licenses include one year of updates and support, after which the app may continue to be used under the stated license terms. TablePlus provides macOS, Windows, Linux, and iOS downloads; check the database support notes for the platform you plan to use. The EULA is proprietary rather than an open-source software license.
Strengths
- Supports connections to many database systems from one desktop workspace.
- Keeps edits pending until a user commits them and can preview the SQL before applying a change.
- Provides query editing, filtering, and data import/export in the same client.
Watch out for
- It requires an existing database service or local database file; TablePlus does not host or run the database for you.
- The free trial limits simultaneously open tabs, windows, and advanced filters.
- Some database drivers are platform-specific, so supported connections vary by operating system.
Best for
- Developers who need a desktop GUI for browsing and editing databases they already can access
- Reviewing SQL changes before committing them to a staging or production connection
- Switching among several database protocols from a single client
