What it does

TaxAct Professional provides individual and business return software, client-data imports and filing tools for tax practices. Packages range from unlimited returns to smaller bundles and annual licences with per-return charges. Client Portals and e-signature services are separate additions.

Package choice follows the practice's volume and mix of return types. A firm preparing business returns needs different coverage from one filing only individual Form 1040 returns.

Current annual prices

Prices are in US dollars. The discounted unlimited-bundle prices below apply before the listed January 1, 2027 retail-price change.

Package Annual price Included returns
Complete Bundle $2,095 single user; $2,495 multi-user Unlimited individual and business
1040 Bundle $1,175 single user; $1,375 multi-user Unlimited individual
Business Forty $1,095 40 individual/business returns
1040 Twenty $725 20 individual returns
Business Pay-Per-Return $279.99 base fee Returns charged separately
1040 Pay-Per-Return $169.99 base fee Returns charged separately

Extra individual returns cost $29.99; business returns cost $49.99 where offered. Pay-per-return state editions cost $49 for Business or $44 for 1040. A pay-per-return package still has an annual base fee. The four bundles include their listed state coverage.

Bring in client information

Open Client Manager > Add Client > Convert Clients to TaxAct Professional to start prior-year conversion. Direct conversion supports ProSeries, TaxSlayer Pro and TaxWise. PDF routes cover additional products including Drake, Lacerte and UltraTax.

The imported fields vary by form. For example, 1040 data includes taxpayer identity and filing status, while Schedule C includes business details and ending inventory. This does not mean every value in an old return transfers.

Prepare a batch for electronic filing

Within a client's return, use E-file > Submit Electronic Filing Return. Complete the client-specific authorization and other filing screens, fix required alerts and handle any return fee. The practice's EFIN, its electronic filing identification number, must be verified.

On Create and Submit, choose Submit Later. When the batch is ready, open Preparer > Submit Client E-files, select the returns and click Submit. A confirmation and TaxAct receipt email follow transmission.

Create the professional account with mobile number, email, username and password. Client Portals costs a separate $299.95 a year with 5GB storage; e-signatures are sold separately and integration into that portal is advertised for tax year 2026. The portal's 14-day trial is distinct from the tax-preparation software's free-to-try offer.

Strengths

  • Can hold completed returns for a selected batch transmission
  • Prior-year conversion supports several named professional tax products

Watch out for

  • Pay-per-return options also charge an annual licence fee
  • Client Portals and e-signatures cost extra
  • Electronic filing requires verified practice information

Best for

  • US tax practices comparing individual and business return volumes before choosing a package
