What it does

TaxJar helps online businesses combine sales data, track US sales tax obligations and prepare state reports. Professional adds real-time tax calculations, while AutoFile can submit returns after separate state enrollment. Paid plans are based on order volume, with a 30-day trial.

Reporting and filing are separate steps

TaxJar suits sellers working through their own online store, marketplaces or both. Starter focuses on reports and filing; Professional also supports real-time tax calculations and more integrations.

A subscription alone does not enroll a business in AutoFile. Each state needs its own enrollment before TaxJar can file there.

TaxJar pricing

At 200 orders a month, Starter is $39/month and Professional is $99/month. Order volume counts sales, refunds and returns. Additional credits are $50 on Starter and $55 on Professional.

The free trial lasts 30 days. AutoFile enrollment requires a paid subscription, so filing is not part of the trial.

Enrolling a state in AutoFile

Have an active state sales tax registration and a US bank account ready. Some states also require state-issued e-filing credentials.

  1. In State Nexus Settings, enter the registration number and correct filing frequency.
  2. Choose Enroll in AutoFile for that state.
  3. Complete the business, bank and state details, matching the state's records.
  4. Select the first available filing period and submit the enrollment.

Pending means TaxJar is still checking the information. Wait for confirmation of successful enrollment. Its stated cutoff is 5pm Eastern on the last day of the month before the first requested return is due; an unavailable filing period must be handled outside AutoFile.

Strengths

  • Starter accepts three data-import integrations; Professional accepts ten.
  • Two AutoFile credits a year are included with Starter and four with Professional.

Watch out for

  • AutoFile requires separate enrollment for each state
  • Filing needs a US bank account and an active sales tax registration
  • Additional return-filing credits cost extra beyond the included allowance

Best for

  • Online sellers needing US state sales-tax reports
  • Businesses that want TaxJar to file recurring state returns after enrollment
