What it does

TaxSlayer Pro provides desktop and cloud tax-preparation options for US practices, with package-specific mobile intake, portal and signature tools. Paid software covers unlimited individual returns, with corporate preparation included in the desktop Premium package. A free Pro Web demonstration lets a preparer explore the software without submitting returns.

TaxSlayer Pro is designed for preparers filing clients' US returns. Its range includes desktop and cloud options, with individual federal, state and local return preparation. TaxesToGo lets clients send photographs and tax information to the preparer. Package selection determines which collection and signature tools accompany the return-preparation work.

Choose the tax-season package

Package Listed software price before applicable state taxes Main distinction
Pro Classic $1,395 Desktop individual-return preparation
Pro Web $1,595 Browser access, mobile intake and client portal
Pro Premium $1,695 Desktop package with corporate returns and paperless tools

TaxSlayer sells these as renewable tax-season software. Pro Web's free demo cannot submit a return. A combined Pro Web + Corporate offer requires contact with sales.

Create the customer account, choose the software and configure Account Hub.

Reuse a set of forms in Pro Web

Open Configuration > Taxpayer Profiles > + ADD TAXPAYER PROFILE. Name the profile, select the current tax year, add the forms and arrange their order before saving. A profile can represent a recurring type of client work.

Choose that profile when starting a new return under Start New Tax Return. It determines which entry pages appear. A profile cannot be added after the return has already been created.

On the Submission page, Mark tax return as complete makes the return eligible for transmission. Leave it unchecked while preparation is unfinished. Returning a completed return to In Progress requires both the appropriate user permission and an invoice that has not been marked paid.

Strengths

  • The listed packages include unlimited individual returns and state filing.
  • Account Hub provides employee logins, software access and client return-status information.

Watch out for

  • The Pro Web demo cannot submit returns.
  • A taxpayer profile must be chosen when a return is created.
  • Reopening a completed Pro Web return depends on permissions and invoice status.

Best for

  • US tax practices comparing desktop and browser preparation
  • Preparers who repeatedly use similar form sets for client returns
