What it does
Tayasui Sketches provides digital pencils, paint tools and canvas controls. It offers freemium and Pro versions, with Pro features including an extended brush editor, colour mixing and extra rulers.
The pencil responds to Apple Pencil tilt for shading, while marker and ink tools change their stroke with pressure or direction. On iPad, a two-finger tap undoes a mark and a three-finger tap redoes it. The canvas can rotate, and Zen mode hides the surrounding controls.
To send a drawing out, open More options, choose Export, then select a format and destination. The iPad file controls include saving to Photos or Files and opening the image in another app. Pro adds layered PSD export and transparent PNG output, alongside unlimited layers, wet watercolour, colour mixing and extra rulers. Its brush editor previews changes as you adjust them.
Sketches has a free version and paid Pro features. Tayasui says no app account is required. Mac and Android editions are also available; the iPad-specific gestures and file controls above should not be assumed to match every edition.
Strengths
- Stroke previews show how a tool will draw before you commit a mark.
- Pro exports layered PSDs or transparent PNGs for use in other apps.
Watch out for
- Several highlighted painting and layer capabilities require Pro.
Best for
- Portable sketching
- Natural-style drawing studies
