What it does
Tekton Pipelines is a Kubernetes-native CI/CD component that represents work as Task and Pipeline resources. A Task defines steps, a Pipeline arranges tasks into a workflow, and a PipelineRun instantiates it. Tasks execute on Kubernetes, giving platform teams reusable units to connect into build and release processes.
Start with tasks, then compose a pipeline
The official tutorial uses a local Minikube cluster and the Tekton CLI. It creates individual Tasks, defines a Pipeline that runs them in order, then creates a PipelineRun to instantiate that workflow. Parameters let a task receive values when it runs. As an illustrative application flow, a team could keep source checkout, build, test, and image-publishing work in separate Tasks, then order those Tasks in a Pipeline. Those are documented concepts, not steps run for this listing.
Kubernetes is the execution substrate
Tekton installs as a Kubernetes extension and uses containerized work units on the cluster. That makes it a fit for teams standardizing CI execution alongside their Kubernetes platform, but it means a cluster and its capacity are part of the build system. The quickstart uses Minikube for a local learning path and asks readers to install tkn; production setup and cluster operations remain the team's responsibility. The project publishes an Apache 2.0 license and is not described here as a hosted build-minute service.
Strengths
- Tasks can be run independently or assembled into Pipelines, which define reusable workflow steps.
- Kubernetes resources and containers form the execution model, and the project documents builds, tests, and deployments across cloud and on-premises environments.
- The official tutorial provides a concrete first path from Tasks to a PipelineRun using Minikube and the Tekton CLI.
Watch out for
- The documented tutorial requires a local Kubernetes cluster and the `tkn` CLI; the pipeline component itself runs on Kubernetes.
- Teams provide and operate the Kubernetes capacity and the container images and configuration needed by their tasks.
Best for
- Platform teams building reusable CI/CD building blocks around Kubernetes.
- Organizations that want task execution on their own cloud or on-premises Kubernetes infrastructure.
