What it does

Theia IDE is an end-user code editor available as a desktop application and an online environment. It is built on the Eclipse Theia Platform, a separate framework for creating custom IDEs and developer tools. The IDE supports VS Code extensions through Open VSX, and its website describes optional AI features that can connect to cloud, self-hosted, or local models. This entry covers the ready-to-use IDE, not the platform framework.

Choose where the IDE runs

Theia's site offers desktop downloads and an online tryout. The online demo is hosted by Theia.cloud and is limited to 30 minutes per session, so use it to inspect the editor rather than as an assumed permanent workspace. For longer work, install the desktop build or use a Theia-based environment operated by your organization. The Eclipse project downloads page lists packages for Windows, Linux, and macOS.

Once a project is open, the documented extension workflow is to open View > Extensions or run Toggle Extensions View, search the available Open VSX entries, inspect an extension's details, and install it. This is a practical way to add language support or a debugger without treating the editor as a fixed bundle.

Theia supports many VS Code extensions, but compatibility is not universal. Its FAQ calls out proprietary Microsoft extensions such as Live Share and Remote Development as unavailable in Theia. The Theia IDE project is MIT-licensed and can be adapted, while its underlying Theia Platform is a separate project used to build other tools.

Strengths

  • The ready-to-use IDE is offered for desktop and browser-based use, rather than only as a framework for adopters.
  • The extension view can install compatible tools from Open VSX at runtime.
  • The IDE's own repository publishes an MIT license.

Watch out for

  • Some proprietary Microsoft VS Code extensions are not available in Theia.
  • The hosted online tryout is limited to 30 minutes per session; longer use requires a desktop or separately operated environment.

Best for

  • Developers who want to try an extensible browser or desktop IDE
  • Teams that need an open-source editor they can adapt or deploy in their own environment
  • Users who can select compatible extensions from Open VSX
