What it does
TidalCycles describes musical patterns in code and uses SuperCollider for synthesis and MIDI.
Write and transform coded patterns for timing, notes and sound parameters. A local system needs more than the pattern library: the Linux guide lists Haskell, SuperCollider, SuperDirt, Git and a supported text editor.
Start SuperCollider and SuperDirt first, then launch Tidal from the editor. SuperDirt receives the pattern messages and SuperCollider produces the sound. Check the component versions and the instructions for your own operating system.
Strengths
- Flexible musical pattern language
Watch out for
- Uses a separate synthesis environment
Best for
- Performers improvising with coded patterns
