What it does

Tipalti brings accounts payable automation and supplier payments into one system. Its separate Mass Payments offering serves businesses paying networks of creators, sellers and other recipients. Access is arranged with the sales team, and the US site publishes monthly starting prices plus transaction charges.

An invoice moves through capture, coding, matching, approval and payment. Tipalti extracts both the overall invoice details and individual line items, then suggests accounting codes from previous patterns. Compare the bill with its purchase order and, for three-way matching, the goods receipt. Differences in quantity, price or currency are highlighted for review; tolerance settings decide which differences need intervention.

Approved invoices can be grouped into payment batches. Separate duties between staff, and use the automatic payment hold when the account lacks sufficient funds. Payment data then syncs to the connected accounting or enterprise resource planning system, commonly called an ERP, for reconciliation.

Suppliers enter their own payment preferences and can follow invoice and payment history through the Supplier Hub. Onboarding can be tailored to each business entity. This is useful where several subsidiaries share a finance team but need different supplier information or processes.

Starting costs

The US pricing page lists Accounts Payable from $99 per month and Mass Payments from $249 per month. Both include unlimited users and a recipient portal. Accounts Payable also has per-invoice and payment charges; Mass Payments has payment charges. Procurement, Expenses and Treasury are additional modules. Standard implementation is included, while a more complex setup may need paid professional services. Ask for a quote covering the intended entities, payment routes and accounting integration.

Strengths

  • Approvers can review and approve invoices from email without logging into the platform
  • Supplier onboarding can collect W-9 and W-8 tax forms and prepare US tax-reporting data

Watch out for

  • Automatic purchase-order delivery in the supplier-management offering is documented for NetSuite and Sage Intacct

Best for

  • Finance teams replacing a chain of invoice spreadsheets and approval emails
  • Businesses paying large groups of external contributors
