What it does
TrueLayer provides Pay by Bank infrastructure for businesses receiving and sending account-to-account payments in the UK and EU. Its products include checkout, payouts and recurring bank-payment arrangements. Developers register in Console, and production merchant accounts and commercial terms are arranged with the team.
Create the integration in Console, upload the public signing key and set the address for automatic payment notifications, called webhooks. For a merchant account, link the company's bank account before using it for top-ups or withdrawals.
A payment request supplies the amount, currency, beneficiary and customer details. It returns a payment identifier that connects the bank-authorization journey with the resulting transaction. Use a hosted page, web or mobile integration kit, or a custom interface to let the customer select their bank and approve payment.
Keep execution and receipt separate in your order handling. Executed means the payment was submitted successfully to the bank; Settled confirms that it reached the TrueLayer merchant account. A payment sent to an external account does not produce the same Settled confirmation. The Console payments view and webhooks help operations staff follow each result.
For regular transfers to the linked business bank account, open Merchant Account, select the account and choose Merchant Account Sweeping. Set the balance threshold and a daily, weekly or fortnightly interval. The production arrangement determines the available products and bank coverage; ask for the transaction and payout tariff when discussing the business use case.
Strengths
- Refunds use the original payment identifier, with several partial refunds allowed up to the original value.
- Low-balance notifications can help keep enough funds available for customer payouts.
- Official ecommerce plugins are available for WooCommerce, Shopify and Magento.
Watch out for
- Payments and merchant accounts use GBP or EUR without conversion between the two.
- Each client identifier can have only one merchant account per currency.
- Sending payouts requires the Payouts product; ordinary refunds do not.
Best for
- Businesses collecting account top-ups and returning funds to the same customers
- Online stores adding a bank-payment choice to checkout
