What it does
Tuta provides email, calendar and contact apps with an encryption-centered design. It offers a free account and paid options including custom-domain addresses.
Tuta combines hosted mail with calendars and contacts through its own browser, desktop and mobile clients. It automatically encrypts conversations between Tuta users. For an outside recipient, a protected conversation requires a shared password that can be reused with that contact.
That differs from receiving an ordinary email from another provider: Tuta says it encrypts such mail after it arrives, so the earlier delivery was not end-to-end encrypted. Email addresses and message dates remain unencrypted metadata. The service generates keys locally and protects the private key with the account password. Its encryption design is different from adding a PGP plug-in to an ordinary mailbox.
