What it does
Twinmotion combines imported 3D designs with scene assets, materials and lighting for visual presentations. Datasmith connections can keep models linked to supported CAD and BIM applications. Eligible individuals, small businesses, students and educational institutions can use the application free; Twinmotion Cloud requires a paid seat.
Try a scene from placement to export
The Lakehouse Retreat demo provides a concrete starting point. Open the Home panel's Learning tab, download the demo and open it. From Library > Objects, drag an object into the scene. The Translate, Rotate and Scale tools adjust its position and size; dragging the centre of the Translate control snaps it onto another object.
Materials are applied by dragging them from Library > Materials. The Material picker selects a surface for changes such as colour. To save a still, create it with Media's Add image button, select that image in Export, then use Start export and choose a destination folder.
For working designs, Datasmith can synchronise models from applications such as Revit, Archicad, Rhino and SketchUp Pro while retaining hierarchy, objects and materials. Several design files can be combined in one scene.
Cost and platform differences
Free use covers eligible individuals and businesses with less than US$1 million in revenue during the previous 12 months, plus students and educational institutions. A paid seat costs US$445 per year and includes Twinmotion Cloud and one year of upgrades.
Windows and Mac versions have different limits. The Mac version does not support Path Tracer or VR mode; its Lumen lighting uses software ray tracing. Mac installations from Twinmotion 2026.1 also require Xcode. The minimum hardware configuration is intended for smaller scenes and is not suitable for the most demanding rendering modes.
Strengths
- Datasmith can retain model hierarchy and materials while synchronising revisions.
- A supplied demo supports a complete first scene-to-image exercise.
Watch out for
- Twinmotion Cloud requires a paid seat.
- Path Tracer and VR mode are unavailable on Mac.
Best for
- Architects presenting models from CAD and BIM tools
- Designers combining several project models into a visual scene
