What it does

Typeface is a Mac font manager for comparing, organising and activating a local font library. It offers tags, body-text previews, variable-font controls and a Quick Collection shortlist. A 15-day trial is followed by a one-time Pro purchase, with optional payments for later feature updates.

Compare fonts beyond a specimen word

Typeface can preview paragraphs, inspect OpenType features and compare individual characters. Variable-font controls expose CSS values for handing a chosen setting to a web developer. Use the Quick Collection to mark candidates, remove unsuitable ones and store the remaining selection under a tag.

The app watches imported folders and provides temporary, persistent and automatic activation. A licence covers one person on multiple Macs; teams need a licence for each user.

Pro purchase and updates

The trial includes all features for 15 days. A Pro purchase keeps the features you bought permanently and includes new Pro features released during the next 12 months. Extending that update period is optional. The standalone purchase and Mac App Store purchase are separate: a licence from one cannot activate the other. For the standalone edition, install the app and double-click the licence file sent after purchase.

Strengths

  • Includes body-text and variable-font previews.
  • Provides tags and a persistent shortlist collection.

Watch out for

  • Requires macOS 12 or later.
  • New Pro features released after the first 12 months need an optional licence extension.
  • Standalone and Mac App Store purchases are not interchangeable.

Best for

  • Mac designers comparing font candidates.
  • Inspecting OpenType features in a local library.
