What it does

Pizza Typefaces publishes families including Kern, Orelo, Fleyt, Pleasure and ModelStandard. Its catalog identifies variable axes and related branches, from narrow and expanded designs to mono and proportional companions.

ModelStandard makes spacing part of the design choice. Its Mono, SemiMono and Sans branches share a variable space, with Weight, Monospace and Italic controls. Move the sliders to compare the same wording, then use Save custom if a particular intermediate setting suits the layout. Saved instances appear among the purchase options. Complete and Family packages include their corresponding variable fonts as well as static styles.

Create an account through Login, then Register before requesting trials or purchasing. Trial files arrive by email and include a reduced character set with alternates; a fuller test version can be requested. The Buy panel asks for the kind of use and the final client’s total employee count before the package or instance. Enter the client as License owner when buying on its behalf.

Fees are paid once, with no renewal or company-growth upgrade for an already licensed use. Adding another kind of use requires a new purchase at the current company size. Web coverage has no traffic cap, but each additional domain needs another licence and must use the supplied WOFF2 files. Online video and wider distribution to agencies or partners have their own licence requirements.

Strengths

  • Lets visitors save and purchase a custom variable-font instance.
  • Includes variable files with Complete and Family packages.
  • Existing licensed uses do not need upgrades solely because the client grows.

Watch out for

  • Account registration is required for trials and purchases.
  • Additional domains and additional uses need separate coverage.
  • The ordinary trial has a reduced character set.

Best for

  • Editorial layouts needing several widths
  • Designers comparing mono and proportional spacing
  • Brands choosing a custom position within a variable family
