What it does
ullstein bild is a picture archive for professional publishing and journalistic work. Its site combines historical and contemporary collections with keyword, media-number and within-results searches.
The search field accepts a subject or a known media number, and Search within results can narrow an existing selection. Archives, Events, Topical and Editor’s Choice provide alternative starting points. Registration asks for company details and intended usage.
Downloads can be used for inspection and selection for 30 days without a download fee. Publication rights are separate and paid: the usage declaration asks for the medium, image size, print run, licence period, territory and type of use. Unlicensed downloads must be deleted after the selection period.
The standard licence is for one use, with further uses and marketing permissions requiring a separate agreement. Image alterations also need written permission. This makes the archive most suitable for a defined editorial assignment with a clear publication plan.
Strengths
- Media-number and within-results searches help identify a precise photograph.
- A 30-day selection period allows downloaded candidates to be assessed before licensing.
Watch out for
