A focused profile makes the service easier to understand. Upwork allows up to 15 skills and asks freelancers to choose service categories; employment history can include relevant work completed elsewhere. The hourly profile rate is a starting point and can be changed for a proposal without changing existing contracts.

Calculate the net amount before agreeing to work. The freelancer service fee currently ranges from 0% to 15% per contract, is shown during the proposal or offer process and locks once a proposal, offer or contract is sent. A rate calculator helps connect the client’s price with take-home earnings. Basic profiles and Freelancer Plus also differ: a custom profile URL belongs to Plus. Someone preparing a first profile can begin with a clear speciality and relevant examples, then consider paid features against the actual work being pursued.

Submitting proposals also uses Connects, which are separate from the fee on earnings. The number required is shown on the job and can change. Purchased Connects cost US$0.15 each and require a verified billing method. A proposal lets you set the rate or fixed-price terms, add relevant work samples and review the details before sending.
