What it does

E*TRADE from Morgan Stanley provides brokerage accounts, market research and general or active-trading platforms. Its demo library introduces stock, ETF and fund screens as well as options analysis. Online US-listed stocks and ETFs have zero commissions; options and other services can carry additional charges.

Use the demos to compare the workspaces

The general platform has stock, ETF and mutual-fund screens. The demo library also describes Options Analyzer for price and time scenarios and Options Income Backtester for historical strategy comparisons. Power E*TRADE is aimed at a more active stocks, options and futures workflow.

What zero commission covers

Online US exchange-listed stock trades have US$0 commissions. Options cost US$0.65 per contract, falling to US$0.50 with at least 30 qualifying trades per quarter. OTC stock trades and broker-assisted orders have separate charges, and regulatory or exchange fees may apply.

Choose an account type through Open an account. The standard brokerage account has no minimum funding requirement, but deposited funds must clear before trading. The forms library separates international applications, options upgrades and futures activation, so a basic account should not be assumed to include every instrument or jurisdiction.

Strengths

  • The demo library covers several security screeners and options-analysis tools
  • International applications and instrument upgrades have separate forms

Watch out for

  • Options contract and OTC trading charges sit outside the zero-commission headline
  • Futures and options require the appropriate account features

Best for

  • Investors comparing general and active securities platforms
  • Users who want to inspect analysis tools before opening an account
