What it does
UV-Packer arranges unwrapped UV islands into texture space. Its free Packer-IO application manages UV channels on Windows and Mac, with additional routes for artists working in Blender, 3ds Max or Unreal Engine.
Packer-IO starts with a mesh that already has UVs. Drag a supported file into the window, or use the plus icon to open it. Inputs include FBX, OBJ, glTF/GLB, DAE, PLY and STL.
Choose Pack, then set the source and target UV channels. Writing from channel 0 back to 0 replaces that layout; choose another target to preserve the original. Set rotation and tile options, select Efficient, Quality or Turbo, and click Pack. Quality spends more time placing islands, with less benefit when there are few islands or their sizes are similar. Turbo skips hole detection and convexity analysis.
Use the left sidebar's floppy-disk icon to export, choose a destination and format, and click Save. OBJ carries only channel 0, while STL cannot retain UVs. Keep mode merges existing UV data without moving islands or fixing overlaps.
The old Blender add-on has been replaced by UnwrellaConnect. The current extension requires Blender 4.2 or later and the installed Packer-IO application for free packing. UV unwrapping instead requires paid Unwrella-IO.
Artist use is free, including commercial work. Embedding the engine in commercial software requires the separate SDK, listed at EUR 5,000 for a permanent licence with one year of updates and support.
Strengths
- Packer-IO can manage up to eight UV channels.
- Standalone and host integrations serve different modelling setups.
Watch out for
- Keep mode does not remove overlapping islands.
- OBJ export retains only UV channel 0.
Best for
- Artists repacking existing UV layouts
- Developers evaluating an embeddable UV-packing engine
