What it does

Vaadin supplies UI components with Java and TypeScript APIs, including grids, forms, charts and spreadsheet interfaces. The library uses Web Components and includes theming guidance and a Figma library.

Vaadin’s component range suits applications built around tables, forms and other data-heavy screens. Its standard Grid supports sorting, filtering and lazy loading, while the documentation offers Show code examples for Java Flow, React and Lit.

A Java grid starts by declaring the data type, adding columns and headers, then supplying items. Grid normally scrolls within a fixed height. Setting it to expand to every row removes that scrolling, but the documentation advises against this for large datasets because of performance costs.

The Java quickstart downloads a Spring Boot starter that can run with mvn spring-boot:run and open at localhost:8080. Core development does not require sign-in; Copilot’s AI features ask for a free account on first use.

The Free plan includes Apache-2.0 components for commercial use. Pro adds commercial controls such as Charts, Spreadsheet and Grid Pro, plus TestBench. It is listed at US$159 or €149 per developer per month, with a 30-day trial. Every developer contributing to a project that uses commercial features needs an active licence, including contractors. Enterprise uses application-based custom pricing.

Strengths

  • Data-oriented components include documented grid and spreadsheet capabilities.
  • Java and TypeScript APIs accompany theming and Figma resources.
  • The open-source components are free for commercial applications.

Watch out for

  • Some Pro components have commercial terms separate from the open-source controls.
  • Projects using commercial features need a licence for every contributing developer.
  • Expanding Grid to show every row can cause performance problems with large datasets.

Best for

  • Teams designing data-rich Java or web applications
