What it does
VCV Rack recreates modular synthesis with patchable modules and optional plugin-hosting features.
Start with an oscillator, an envelope and an output, then add modulation once the basic signal path is clear. Saved patches and polyphonic cables extend what a physical rack can do. The modular approach rewards understanding the signal flow rather than browsing presets alone.
Rack's editions and additional modules have separate terms. Hosting external VST instruments requires the separately purchased VCV Host module described on the site. Graphics and processor requirements also matter, especially on older or integrated-GPU systems. Rack 2 Free runs standalone; hosting Rack itself as a DAW plugin requires Pro. That is separate from buying VCV Host to load other VST plugins inside Rack.
