What it does

Velodrome is a token exchange on Optimism. Its published V2 contracts cover stable and volatile asset pools, routes through multiple pools, liquidity deposits and separate tracking of trading fees.

Velodrome's V2 contracts are useful to developers connecting a swap interface or liquidity tool to its Optimism pools. The Router handles exchanges through several pools as well as deposits and withdrawals. PoolFees stores trading charges separately from the assets used to quote swaps, so a pool balance alone does not describe all the fees attributable to a position.

The V2 specification distinguishes stable pools, intended for assets with closely related prices, from volatile pools. An integration needs the correct pool type and factory when finding a pair. Fees can be configured for individual pools, and an authorised role can pause their swaps. The charge and availability of one pool therefore should not be carried over to another.

For liquidity entry, the router also offers a zap: it converts one starting token into the pair needed for a pool. It can combine that conversion with staking the resulting liquidity position. This particular convenience supports standard tokens, not tokens that deduct a fee during transfer, even though other router functions support those assets.

Staking a liquidity position changes the reward arrangement. The gauge distributes protocol token rewards, while claims on the pool's trading fees pass to the gauge. Developers displaying earnings should distinguish those token rewards from fees retained by an unstaked position. The public contract guide is especially helpful for this accounting distinction; it is more technical than a consumer exchange onboarding guide.

Strengths

  • Router supports paths through several pools and liquidity entry
  • Pool fee storage is separate from trading reserves

Watch out for

  • Zap entry does not support tokens that charge a transfer fee
  • Individual pools have configurable fees and can be paused

Best for

  • Developers integrating Velodrome V2 swaps on Optimism
  • Liquidity tools that need to distinguish trading fees from staking rewards
