What it does
VeraCrypt is disk-encryption software supporting file-hosted containers, partitions and selected system-drive workflows.
VeraCrypt offers several storage scopes: a file-hosted container mounts as a drive, while partition or Windows system encryption affects more of the computer. Choose that scope before setup and keep an independent backup of important data. System encryption requires Rescue Disk media. The documentation says this can repair boot-loader or key-data damage, but it still requires the correct password. Restoring old key data can restore the password valid when that rescue media was created, so the docs call for replacing it after a password change. A mounted volume remains available to the running system; storage encryption does not isolate it from every application on an unlocked computer.
The code has mixed Apache 2.0 and legacy TrueCrypt 3.0 licence terms, so redistribution should follow the component notices.
