What it does
x265 encodes video streams in H.265/HEVC. Its official project material describes a free software application and library under GNU GPL licensing.
The x265 CLI takes raw YUV or Y4M input and writes a raw HEVC bitstream, with audio and container packaging handled elsewhere. Raw input needs correct picture size, frame rate, bit depth and chroma interpretation. Input chroma must match output because libx265 does not convert subsampling. Presets and tunes can be followed by individual overrides, while library callers use its parameter API rather than CLI-only file options. Output profile/depth availability follows the linked build. GPL and commercial licensing routes are offered.
