What it does
VRoid Studio is a free character editor for Windows, Mac and iPad. Adjustable face and body presets, hair drawn in strokes, and layered texture painting help artists build humanoid avatars for VRM-compatible applications.
Character parameters set proportions, while texture painting works on the model or its UV layout. Hair is built in chunks, with shape and bounce settings for each chunk.
To export from the standard Model Editor, select the upper-right export icon and choose Export VRM. Adjust the polygon, material and bone reductions, then choose Export. Select VRM 0.0 or 1.0, enter its title or avatar name and creator, and choose a destination. The separate Dress-up feature exports VRM 1.0 only, even when the imported model uses 0.x.
Texture Display Resolution affects more than the preview. A VRM exported while this setting is at 1/2 also receives reduced textures. The original texture size remains in the .vroid project, so keep that project when preparing different exports. Increasing display resolution uses more memory and can make some devices less stable.
Pixiv's supplied assets generally allow commercial use and resale of created models under the guidelines, unless an asset has special clauses. They are not public-domain assets. Third-party content has its own terms, and a public character-generation application using VRoid meshes or textures needs a separate licence.
Strengths
- Layered texture painting works in 3D and on the UV layout.
- Standard Model Editor export offers VRM 0.0 and 1.0.
Watch out for
- Half-resolution texture display also reduces textures in VRM exports.
- Public character-generation applications need a separate licence.
Best for
- Artists customising stylised humanoid avatars
- Creators preparing VRM models for compatible applications
