What it does

Wasabi is a free, self-custody Bitcoin wallet for desktop computers. It uses compact blockchain filters and Tor connections, with coin labels, hardware-wallet support and optional coordinated transactions.

Wasabi's design separates finding your Bitcoin transactions from downloading an entire blockchain. Compact filters help the wallet request relevant blocks, while Tor routes its network connections. You still choose what to spend and where it goes. Its privacy features do not make careless address sharing or compromised recovery material harmless.

The software is free and MIT licensed, with Windows, Mac and Linux versions. There is no official mobile Wasabi app. Bitcoin network fees remain payable, and optional multi-party transactions use an independently chosen coordination service with its own conditions.

Create a wallet through Add Wallet, then Create a new wallet. Name it, choose the backup type and follow the recovery-word checks. If you set a passphrase, preserve it separately as well: the words alone cannot recover that passphrase-protected wallet. The passphrase is part of access to the Bitcoin, not merely a password that customer support can reset.

Wasabi labels help identify who knows about a received coin or a payment. The wallet can suggest a slightly different payment amount to avoid creating change, and advanced coin control lets you select the exact unspent amounts to use. These controls are especially relevant when combining payments from different sources would reveal a connection between them.

For supported USB signers, enter the destination, amount and label, inspect Preview Transaction and select Send Now. Hardware Wallet Interface provides the connection, but check model compatibility: Trezor One is excluded.

Optional coinjoin transactions combine several participants' payments through an independent coordinator. Its availability and conditions are separate from the wallet itself, and a displayed privacy percentage is not a guarantee of anonymity.

Strengths

  • Compact filters avoid downloading the whole blockchain to find wallet activity
  • Labels and coin selection expose privacy choices before a payment

Watch out for

  • Wasabi has no official mobile version
  • A configured passphrase is required alongside the wallet recovery material

Best for

  • Desktop Bitcoin users who want control over transaction inputs and privacy settings
  • Hardware-wallet owners checking compatibility and signing behaviour
