What it does

WatchGuard Mobile VPN connects remote computers to Firebox-protected networks, with separate SSL and IPsec client and licensing workflows.

For WatchGuard's SSL client, the practical details include where the installer comes from and how it is updated. Fireware 12.11 removes the installer page from the appliance and directs users to WatchGuard's software downloads; that version also stops prompting users when a client update is available. Administrators need an update-distribution process rather than relying on that old prompt.

The IPsec client is a separate choice within the access family. WatchGuard says it is powered by NCP and requires a non-expiring client license. Choose the protocol and client your Firebox configuration supports, then supply the correct connection settings and authentication method.

Strengths

  • Documented SSL and IPsec deployment choices
  • Supports organizational authentication configuration

Watch out for

  • Current SSL client deployment requires a managed update process

Best for

  • Organizations providing remote access through WatchGuard Firebox
