What it does

Wealthfront offers managed investment portfolios and a separate brokerage account where you select stocks and ETFs. Managed portfolios use a risk profile and target allocations, while the brokerage leaves those choices with you. The service is aimed at eligible US residents.

The Wealthfront Portfolio builds an allocation around your goals and risk level, then automates investing, reinvestment and rebalancing. You can adjust allocations and choose from its supported funds. Tax-loss harvesting is available for eligible taxable portfolios; the eventual tax benefit depends on your circumstances.

The Brokerage Account is for selecting and maintaining your own stock and ETF holdings. It starts at US$1 and has no Wealthfront account or commission fees. That does not remove the expenses inside an ETF.

The main Wealthfront Portfolio charges 0.25% of assets annually, deducted monthly. Fund expenses are additional. Other managed products, including direct-index and bond arrangements, have their own schedules.

Get started separates the managed portfolio from brokerage. Standard applicants need to be 18 or older, currently reside in the US, and provide a permanent US address, SSN and a US phone number that receives verification texts. Special verification routes exist for qualifying military or government personnel overseas.

Strengths

Watch out for

  • Managed-portfolio fees are additional to underlying fund expenses
  • Standard access requires US residence and identity details

Best for

  • US investors choosing between delegated and self-directed portfolio management
  • People who want to adjust a managed index allocation
