What it does
Wellcome Collection’s catalogue brings together historical photographs, prints, paintings, film and other material about health and human experience. Format, technique, date and online-availability filters help narrow a visual research brief.
Use Format and Technique to separate photographs from engravings or printed posters, then narrow the date range to the period you need. The Images tab offers a further route into digital imagery, while catalogue records include physical holdings as well.
Digitised material carries different reuse terms, including attribution, noncommercial and public-domain arrangements. The licence attached to the chosen item determines whether it can be used in a commercial publication. Contributor and work references help connect an image with its collection context.
Strengths
- Format and technique filters distinguish different kinds of historical imagery.
- Contributor and catalogue information preserve the image’s collection context.
Watch out for
- Reuse terms differ between items; some licences exclude commercial use.
Best for
- Editors researching visual histories of health and medicine
