What it does

WhatFontIs searches for matching and similar fonts from an image. It includes crop and character-preparation steps, links to free and commercial candidates, and a free plan alongside paid Pro membership.

Use Browse, drag in an image, paste from the clipboard or supply an image URL. The workflow moves through Upload, Crop, Optimize and Input. A clear horizontal line in one font style works best; the help suggests four to six distinct characters. For connected script lettering, the image editor can separate letters that would otherwise be analyzed together.

Results link to places to obtain or license the suggested fonts. Compare those candidates with the image, especially when the original may be custom lettering. If the results are wrong, the results page has a route for posting the image to the community forum.

The ad-supported free plan allows five identifications per day. Pro adds unlimited searches, custom-text previews, price and foundry filters, and saved results. Its seven-day trial becomes a paid subscription at the chosen annual or three-year billing term unless cancelled. Free identification does not make every font found through it free to use.

Strengths

  • Includes tools for cropping and separating connected letters.
  • Results link to free and commercial font sources.
  • Pro can filter candidates by price or foundry.

Watch out for

  • The free plan has ads and a daily search limit.
  • Blurred images and touching letters can make matching unreliable.
  • The Pro trial converts to a paid subscription unless cancelled.

Best for

  • Identifying type in an image
  • Finding alternatives to an unknown font
