What it does
whatsmydns.net checks domain records through nameservers in several countries and displays the returned answers on a map and location list.
Enter the name and record type, then inspect individual answers by selecting a location or map marker. That is more useful after a change than relying on the map alone: a successful response may still contain the previous value. whatsmydns.net maintains a selected set of nameservers and explains that recursive answers are cached for their TTL. The result therefore reflects those resolvers at the observation time; it cannot reproduce every visitor’s device, browser or provider cache. Keep the expected record and change time with the comparison. The page calls the tool free. Its broad propagation-time guidance should not be treated as a deadline by which every cache will agree.
Strengths
- Map and per-location answer views
- Explains DNS cache and TTL effects
Watch out for
- Sampled resolvers do not cover every user's DNS cache
