What it does
Hibiscus is a Java banking application that runs inside Jameica on Windows, Mac and Linux. It retrieves balances, transactions and electronic statements through supported HBCI connections, while offline accounts can be maintained alongside them. The developer publishes it under the GNU GPL version 2.
A combined account refresh, called Rundruf, gathers activity from several bank connections into the same desktop workspace. Global search covers accounts, payment orders, statements and address-book entries. The address book can also show payments to or from a selected contact.
Hibiscus retrieves balances and transactions, including pending entries where the bank supports them. It can handle individual or batch transfers and direct debits, scheduled payments and standing-order changes. Connection options include PIN/TAN methods such as chipTAN, pushTAN and photoTAN, as well as supported chipcards and key files. A bank’s supported procedure determines which functions are available.
Installation and account setup
Install Jameica first. Its Windows and Mac downloads include Java; Linux needs Java 17 or newer installed separately. In Jameica, choose Datei → Plugins online suchen, open Verfügbare Plugins, select hibiscus and install it. A downloaded plugin ZIP can alternatively be added through Datei → Einstellungen → Plugins → Neues Plugin installieren.
On first use, choose Bank-Zugang einrichten and enter the connection information supplied by the bank. Offline accounts provide another route for balances that are maintained manually.
Statement exports include CSV, PDF, HTML and MT940. Imports support formats including CSV, MT940 and Moneyplex, while graphical reports summarise the recorded activity. The application’s GPLv2 licence allows modification and redistribution under its terms. This is locally installed banking software, with separate Jameica and bank-connection setup rather than a single hosted account.
Strengths
- Combined refresh and search cover several bank connections and record types.
- Offline accounts can sit beside connected accounts.
- Multiple import and export formats support a separate analysis or archive.
Watch out for
- Setup requires Jameica and configuration of the bank connection.
- Available transactions depend on the bank’s supported HBCI procedure.
Best for
- Desktop users managing supported German bank connections
- People who want local banking records and open-source software
