What it does

Wings 3D is a free, open-source subdivision modeller for polygon assets. Its mesh tools, materials and AutoUV mapping cover building and preparing a model for texturing. Personal and commercial use is allowed, but the application has no animation tools.

Wings 3D fits a pipeline where building and unwrapping a mesh are separate from animation. Virtual Mirror supports symmetrical modelling, Smooth Preview shows the subdivided form, and tools such as Extrude, Bevel, Bridge and Weld change the mesh.

Right-click menus adapt to the selected geometry. The Info Line at the bottom of the window explains the highlighted command and its mouse-button variations, including operations that use an extra point or vector. Once a mesh is ready for texturing, AutoUV cuts and unfolds its surface and exports the layout for painting. OBJ is among the supported 3D exports.

The application is open source and free for personal and commercial projects. It does not support animation, so an animated asset needs another application after modelling.

Strengths

  • Virtual Mirror and Smooth Preview support symmetrical subdivision work.
  • The Info Line explains command variations for different mouse buttons.
  • AutoUV exports an unfolded surface for painting.

Watch out for

  • Animation is not supported.
