What it does

WireMock Cloud is a hosted API simulation service for replacing external or unfinished APIs during development and testing. Teams can create stubs in the web interface, import OpenAPI or other API definitions, record traffic from an accessible service, or automate setup through WireMock's REST APIs. Simulated APIs can model normal responses as well as latency, faults, and other failure conditions. The service supports REST, SOAP, OpenAPI, gRPC, and GraphQL workflows and can be used from development or test environments instead of a production dependency.

Replace a dependency with a simulation

Create a WireMock Cloud account, then choose the setup path that matches the inputs available. For a small example, define a stub manually in the web app. If an API specification already exists, import OpenAPI, Swagger, Postman, or HAR data and use the generated stubs as a starting point. If the real service is reachable, WireMock Cloud can proxy and record traffic to create behavior from observed requests.

Point the application or test environment at the mock API's subdomain and exercise the feature without relying on the live dependency. Add stateful behavior, test data, or failure responses when a simple fixed response is not representative. The docs also describe using WireMock's REST APIs for automation and importing existing WireMock OSS projects.

The free plan is listed as free forever with a monthly call limit; the pricing page also limits the number of simultaneously running mock APIs and request rate. Enterprise is quote-based and adds collaboration and other features. Check these limits against the expected test traffic, since mocks stop or fail when request quotas or rate limits are exceeded.

WireMock Cloud is the hosted service, not a second name for the WireMock OSS library. It uses the OSS engine and supports import and export between the two, but this listing is specifically about the managed cloud account, hosted mock APIs, and its service plans.

Strengths

  • Mock APIs can be created manually, imported from API definitions, recorded from traffic, or managed through REST APIs.
  • The service supports multiple API protocols and can inject faults or other failure behavior for testing.
  • Existing WireMock OSS projects can be imported into the hosted service and exported back out.
  • A permanent free tier supports small individual projects.

Watch out for

  • The free tier is limited to 1,000 API calls per month, three running mock APIs, and a 10-request-per-second rate limit.
  • Enterprise pricing is quote-based, and the free tier excludes some collaboration and advanced simulation features.
  • Mocks stop or begin failing when usage exceeds the plan's request quota or rate limit.

Best for

  • Testing application features that depend on APIs unavailable or costly to call during development
  • Generating mock APIs from OpenAPI specifications or recorded request traffic
  • Checking application behavior under simulated latency, faults, or other non-happy-path responses
