What it does
Wise lets eligible customers hold different currencies, receive money using local account details and make international transfers. Its UK personal account has no subscription fee, with charges tied to services such as conversion and card ordering. Account features and eligibility depend on where you live.
Wise is useful when money arrives in one currency and expenses fall in another. Receiving details can let a client pay into the relevant balance, while conversion and transfers move funds where they are needed. The UK account also supports Direct Debits, repeat payments and shared pots.
To begin on the website or app, create an account and select Add a currency. Complete identity verification before using it. Add money then lets you choose the currency and payment method; a bank payment must come from an account in your own name. Receiving details are available only for supported currencies and regions.
UK personal-account costs
Opening the account and holding balances are free. Conversion and transfers start from 0.24%, with the actual fee depending on the currencies and route. A physical card costs £7 without a subscription. UK-issued cards allow £250 in monthly ATM withdrawals free of Wise’s withdrawal fee; amounts above that carry 2.69%, and the ATM operator may charge separately. Receiving by wire or SWIFT can also cost extra.
The supported-residence list includes the UK and Slovenia, but restrictions are more specific than a single worldwide availability claim. For example, Wise excludes Nevada from its U.S. balance-holding list, and some countries permit only personal or only business balances.
Wise’s legal entity and role vary by region. Wise Europe is a payment institution. Wise Assets, where offered, is an investment service separate from simply holding a currency balance.
